Picture
Rod Sinclair, from Fife, Scotland, now living in Denmark, has sung his songs and played guitar and 5-string banjo all over the world. He contributed to every Tønder Festival, from 1985-1990 as artistic director. With some of Denmark's leading young musicians, Rod provided original music and songs for the Royal Inauguration of Denmark's biggest national park, the Wadden Sea. He’s toured Denmark with Dick Gaughan, fiddle player Brian McNeill and with Danish guitar virtuoso Christian Alvad. Among Rod's many albums is a collection of songs by Robert Burns, "Gammel Venskab - Robert Burns i Danmark", from 2020.

Musician and songwriter Paul Kaplan has been an enthusiastic participant in the folk music world since the late 1960s. His songs “I Had an Old Coat,” “Henry the Accountant,” “Call Me the Whale,” and many others have been covered by such musical legends as Jay Ungar and Molly Mason, Sharon, Lois and Bram (Nickelodeon’s “Elephant Show”), Sally Rogers and Claudia Schmidt, Priscilla Herdman, Ed McCurdy, and Lui Collins. Paul’s song “Vietnam” appears in the Grammy-nominated Best of Broadside, along with singers such as Bob Dylan, Phil Ochs, Tom Paxton, Pete Seeger, etc.
Pete Seeger said “I am a big fan of Paul Kaplan. I love his singing; I love his songs.”

REVIEWS
“Paul Kaplan and Rod Sinclair bring warmth and comfort on a cold autumn evening with their accomplished songs and stories from gentler times. The songs side with the powerless but are strong in their solidarity, love and trust in an alternative, better future. We are reminded what music can do, particularly in these times when a ceasefire seems a distant dream. A powerful concert! Songs of conviction, without prejudice or didactics. Songs that touch us with both bite and wit.”
Assistant professor, UC South Denmark. Mette Solkær

"In Rod's and Paul's friendly banter ... we heard about the interesting history of the songs and their own personal connections to the music, ranging from Scottish ballads and American folk music to their own compositions accompanied by guitars, harmonica, mandolin and banjo. The audience could easily feel Rod and Paul’s close affinity to the music throughout the two-hour concert, imparting to the listeners a special bond. A performance of unique warmth."

Paul Kaplan & Rod Sinclair Tour of Denmark. Oct 2023

13/7/2023

Paul Kaplan and Rod Sinclair first met on the whale project, writing and singing in USA and Denmark about the human predicament and its natural consequences. Now they are coming to Germany and Denmark, singing songs from Paul's and Rod's pens and touching base in the Scottish & US traditions. A duo concert with a wry smile that triggers deeper thoughts. Finely crafted lyrics and tunes resolutely grounded in the terse reality of the old songs.

CPH:DOX & CPH Folk Club: Joan Baez, I Am Noise + concert by Rod Sinclair og Steffan Søgård Sørensen

1/3/2023

The documentary:
In a sun-drenched cabin in Woodside, California, the directors meet the now 82-year-old Joan Baez. She is one of the 20th century’s greatest folk singers and activist voices, and in the autumn of her career she contiunues to shine. ‘Joan Baez, I Am A Noise’ is structured as a visual diary anchored in Baez’s extraordinary archive, including newly discovered home movies, diaries, artworks and sound recordings. At the same time, the singer is remarkably honest and revealing about her life on and off stage – from her lifelong psychiatric struggles to her myriad activist causes with Dr Martin Luther King and others, to a heartbreaking romance and musical partnership with a young Bob Dylan. A searingly honest look at a living legend who has never told the full truth about her life – until now.

The concert:
After the film there will be a concert where the experienced musician and co-founder of the Tønder Festival, Rod Sinclair, will take us into the musical universe of the protest songs and political music of Joan Baez's time. Rod has been singing and playing banjo and guitar on folk music stages all over the world and in Denmark since 1967. With him is double bassist Steffan Søgård Sørensen. The concert is spiced with anecdotes and historical perspectives from the era. Hear for example about when Rod met Joan Baez in Canada. Arranged together with Copenhagen Folk Club and the Folk Music Archive in Tønder.

Scotia Nostra (Steffan Sørensen, Peter Eget, Christopher Davis Maack, Rod Sinclair og Stig Bang-Mortensen) has recorded a CD with the Danish titel "Gammel Venskab - Robert Burns i Danmark". A mix of newly composed songs as well as traditional Burns material. It celebrates the 20 anniversary for the Burns Night tours in Denmark, which these gentlemen have been involved in

The CD was released in late August at Hagges Pub in Tønder in connection with the Tønder Festival. The lads played a few tunes and - everybody who purchased the CD, was given a free beer from the bar!

The production of the CD is supported by a grant from KODA Culture, for which we are very grateful.
